Edo took the paperback from his back pocket, bent the book against its heavy crease and read from the bowed pages. He read with the doggedness of a student studying a Master in literature, re-reading phrases, rolling them under his tongue like candy.
Typically, he favoured the classics, with the odd modern dystopian interjection. Edo compared the overlapping themes. Society feared and wrote about the same things between the centuries: corruption, power, dictatorship, love and death. Only the environments had changed.
One day, Edo was going to write about the poorer classes. It would be set in the near distant future of 4014. Overpopulation had brought war amongst the generations. There would be a children’s revolution. Edo was proud of his idea but until he was inspired to write, he would continue his reading of the nineteenth century short-stories, by Abelard Vom Feld.
Edo was in the middle of ‘Milk Bottle’. It told the story of an old man who donned a velvet blue suit, painted black shoe paint on his comb over and bright white powder on his face. Everyday he would enquire at the apothecary for a remedy for his nosebleed and everyday he was given a packet of tissues and told to blow his nose. The children in the town sneered, likening the whiteness of his face to the Swiss Alps and his nose to one of the peaks.
As Edo read, he reasoned the old man had stepped out, or fallen out of a silent movie perhaps by sneezing. The only way to return would be through his large bleeding nose…
